Institute of Contemporary Comprehensive Painting
The Institute of Contemporary Comprehensive Painting (ICCP) is a specialized research institute established by the China Academy of Art (CAA) in 2015 to promote the teaching and practice of comprehensive painting (综合绘画，Zonghe Huihua).
The Comprehensive Painting Department of the academy was established in 1994. The first batch of undergraduate students were admitted in 1995 whilst its first batch of graduate students were admitted in 1996. Soon it became the earliest specialized department established with the professional emphasis of comprehensive painting in teaching and research among domestic art academies. “The Department of Comprehensive Painting” went through several restructuring: it became one of the three studios of the Department of Integrated Art in 2002, subsequently merged into the five studio of the Department of Oil Painting in 2010, and finally re-established as an independent member department of the School of Painting in 2018. Looking back at the history of ICCP of the past twenty years, the word “Comprehensive Painting” has been kept in ICCP’s department name; ICCP’s ideology of “inclusiveness, synthesis and innovation” is resolute. ICCP has put a persistent effort in the integration of eastern and western art theories and practices, with sensitivity to the traditional and the reality likewise. While constantly broadening its horizons as well as expanding its areas regarding professional media, the institution aims to explore concepts, materials, and languages in depth and in width. ICCP has not only formed its own cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary, cross-media and cross-dimensional characteristics, but also cultivated a large number of contemporary arts talents, experts, scholars and artists with “comprehensive” qualities.
The accumulative teaching and training of the past 20 years has made experts, scholars and artists out of the alumni and faculties of ICCP, who are devoted to the teaching, researching and practices of “comprehensive painting”. These professionals have also promoted the communication and collaboration of comprehensive painting both domestically and internationally. In 2021, ICCP of CAA launched its official website to publish the pedagogical and research results of the department. This website shall also serve as a non-profit, academic and international platform for activities like academic exchanges, exhibitions, workshops, lectures and seminars. This website allows for the further deepening of the basic theoretical concepts and practical methodologies of comprehensive painting. The Institute contains the four following established research areas:
1.The conceptual history and disciplinary history of “comprehensive painting”
2.Teaching and artistic creation methodologies of “comprehensive painting”
3.Research on materials and techniques in contemporary art painting and their relationships with concepts and languages
4.Research on image activation of traditional visual resources

Chen Yan
Researcher, Director of ICCP, Artist.
Chen Yan is the director researcher and artist of ICCP. Acquiring her B.A., M.F.A. and Ph.D. from Department of Oil Painting, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA), she studied in Russian Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin on official assignment. Chen Yan is a professor, doctorial supervisor, and the director of Department of Comprehensive Painting, School of Painting, CAA. She is a member of the China Artists Association, director of China Female Artists Association, deputy director of Zhejiang Committee of Comprehensive Art, and director of Zhejiang Association of Oil-Painters.

Chen Yujun
Researcher, Artist.
Born in 1976, Putian, Fujian Province, Chen Yujun graduated from Department of Comprehensive Painting, CAA with a Bachelor in Arts. He now resides and works in Shanghai.

顾黎明
Gu LiMing
Researcher, Artist.
Gu Liming was born in 1963 in Weifang, Shandong Province. After acquiring his B.A. in Qufu Normal University, he proceeded to attend a program of advanced studies in Department of Oil Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and finally acquired his PhD in fine arts at CAA. He taught at Shandong Academy of Art and China Academy of Art. He is currently a professor and doctorial supervisor at Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. Gu is also the director of China Oil Painting Society.

He Li
Researcher, Artist
Born in Hangzhou in 1967, He Li graduated from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA), Department of Art Education (B.A.). He proceeded to study at the Department of Comprehensive Painting, CAA for his M.F.A., and studied abroad in École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Dijon, France. He is now teaching at Studio No. 1, Department of Comprehensive Painting, School of Painting of CAA.

Huanq Qing was born in 1969 in Xinxiang, Henan Province. He graduated from the Department of Oil Painting at CAA with a B.A. and an M.F.A. Huang is currently associate professor, master supervisor and the deputy director of CAA’s Department of Comprehensive Painting.

Li ZhenPeng
Researcher, Artist
Born in 1969, Li Zhengpeng graduated from the Department of Oil Painting in at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA) with a B.A. and continued his study at the Department of Oil Painting, CAA for his M.F.A. He was the former deputy director of the Department of New Media Art as well as the vice dean of the School of Intermediate Art. He currently is an associate professor and master supervisor at the Department of Comprehensive Painting, CAA.

Ma Jing

Born in 1995 in Huangshi, Hubei Province, Ma Jing obtained a B. A. from the Studio of Integrated Painting, Department of Oil Painting, CAA. She is currently a master’s student enrolled in the Traditional Woodblock Watercolor Printing Studio (Zizhu Zhai) of the Printmaking Department of China Academy of Art.

Sun Tian
Researcher, Scholar of Fine Arts
Graduated from Tongji University (B. Arch.), University of London (M.Sc.), and CAA (Ph.D. in Art), Sun is a research scholar in fine arts with his main research interests in ancient Chinese calligraphy, epistles, Chinese gardens and contemporary architecture.

Wang Jianwei was born in 1977 in Wuzhen, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from School of Arts, Zhejiang Normal University (B.A.) and CAA (M.A.). He attended École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Dijon in France as an exchange student. Now he is an associate professor at CAA.

Wu Xinyuan was born in 1993 in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. She finished both her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Department of Comprehensive Painting in CAA. Wu is a currently enrolled in the department’s doctoral program.

Born in 1978 in Putian, Fujian Province, Wu Junyong graduated from the Department of Printmaking (B.A.) and the Department of New Media Art (M.A.), CAA. He is currently a faculty member at the Department of Printmaking in CAA.

Xu Zhongbo graduated from the Department of Comprehensive Painting of CAA with B.A. and M.F.A. He is the deputy secretary general of Zhejiang Watercolor Painters Association and currently teaches at Hangzhou No. 7 Middle School.

杨劲松
Yang JinSong
Researcher, Artist
Yang Jinsong was born in 1955 in Jinzhong, Shanxi Province. He attended the Special Handicraft Class of Hunan Light Industry School, obtained his B.A. from the Department of Printmaking, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and proceeded to finish his M.F.A. in the Department of Printmaking at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA). He studied abroad in Europe for many years. His past positions include: director of the Department of Printmaking at Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, director of the Department of Comprehensive Painting at CAA, associate dean of School of Intermedia Art at CAA, and deputy curator of CAA art museum. Yang is currently the deputy director of Comprehensive Material Art Committee at China Artists Association, director of Zhejiang Committee of Comprehensive Art, and takes professorial position at CAA.

Born in 1963 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Yu Zhenping graduated from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA) with a B.A. in figure painting. He is a professor and master supervisor in the Department of Comprehensive Painting, School of Painting, CAA.

Zheng Ye
Researcher, Website Editor-in-Chief, Art history scholar.
Zheng Ye graduated from Department of Chinese Painting, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA) with a B.A. in figure painting, He obtained his M.F.A. from Department of Art and Culture, University of Bremen in Germany. He then successfully acquired a PhD in The Institute of Art History, Department of History and Culture at Free University of Berlin. He has worked at the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art in Bremen and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and was the former curator of the International Literature Festival in Berlin and the Lessingtage Festival in Hamburg. He was also the former advisor of the Peter Weiss Foundation Art Program. Zheng Ye is now a researcher with his main interests in modern and contemporary art history and theory, cross-cultural research on Pattern and Textile Art, as well as Bauhaus and modern design.

Born in Fujian Province in 1995, Que Hongxi graduated from the Department of Online Game Art, School of Film and Animation, CAA (B.A.). He is currently enrolled in CAA’s Department of Comprehensive Painting as a master’s student.

Yang Yu was born in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province in 1995. After graduating from Zhejiang Normal University, Department of Fine Arts (B.A.) in 2018, he obtained an M.F.A. from the Department of Comprehensive Painting, CAA in 2022.

Zheng Yuanye was born in 1999 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from the 1st Studio of the Department of Comprehensive Painting, CAA (B.A.) and is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in the same department.
